Unless your doctor orders otherwise, please follow these instructions:

1. Do not eat anything (including gum or breath mints) after 12:00 midnight the night before your surgery. We do encourage you to drink clear liquids including water, coffee, tea and beverages until midnight. Your cooperation is extremely important to reduce the risk of vomiting and having food or fluid enter your lungs during or after anesthesia.

2. Bring a list of your current medications with you to the Surgicenter, including any over-the-counter or herbal preparations you are taking. Bring insulin and/or inhalers.

3. Bring crutches or any other supplies recommended by your surgeon for the day of surgery.

4. Stop smoking and using chewing tobacco the afternoon before surgery.

5. Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours prior to surgery.

6. Bathe or shower the morning of surgery.

7. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Bring a pair of socks to keep your feet warm during surgery.

8. Do not bring jewelry, money, credit cards or valuables. We will not be responsible for these items.

9. Remove all make-up, lipstick, nail polish, hairpins, jewelry and body piercings.

10. Tell us if you wear dentures or a partial plate, soft or hard removable contact lenses or any prosthesis, as you may be asked to remove them. Bring your denture cup, your contact lens case and solution, or a case for your glasses.

11. If you take Plavix, Coumadin, or aspirin, stop taking this medication five days before your scheduled procedure.

12. If you develop a fever, rash, cold symptoms or any other ailment within 24 hours of your surgery, please notify the Surgicenter.

13. If any complications occur during your surgery requiring more extensive surgery or hospitalization, you will be transferred to St. Alexius Medical Center.

14. If you are having a colonoscopy, your doctor's office will provide you with a bowel cleansing protocol or prep. Plan to avoid "red" foods or drinks with red dye. Also avoid any Jell-O. If you are unable to complete your prep, contact your doctor's office.

15. If you are a woman of child-bearing age, a urine pregnancy test will be obtained.

16. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you overnight. Anesthetics can affect your dexterity and reaction time. For these reasons, you will not be permitted to leave the Surgicenter alone or use a taxi service without an escort. If you do not have a driver, your procedure will be canceled.

17. Due to the large volume of patients requiring GI procedures, some patients must wait several weeks to have their procedure performed. As a courtesy to these patients and those that may wish to be scheduled sooner, we ask that you cancel your GI procedure at least 48 hours (2 business days) before the scheduled procedure date. This allows the physician and their staff the time necessary to fill your slot with another patient.
We understand that cancellation of your procedure is sometimes unavoidable due to medical problems or significant conflicts.  If you must cancel your procedure, please call the Mid Dakota Clinic GI Lab/Surgicenter at 701.712.4100, toll-free 800.472.2113 ext. 4100.

Failure to notify us of cancellation in the required time or failure to arrive for a scheduled procedure may result in a charge of $100.00 being posted to your account. Exceptions to this policy will be made only for emergencies and conflicts beyond your control.

18. Please call our office if you have questions or concerns. The number is 701.712.4100, toll-free 800.472.2113, ext. 4100.
