What is a Certified Nurse Midwife?
A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a graduate-level education in nurse midwifery care. Upon completion of graduate studies, a national certification exam must be passed to receive the CNM credentials. CNMs care for women throughout their lifespan with a focus on well-woman and gynecologic services, family planning, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.
Philosophy of Care
Midwives believe that every person has the right to fair, respectful, and ethical care that promotes health, well-being, and disease prevention. Emphasis is placed on continuity of care, person-centered care that respects and is inclusive of diverse histories, backgrounds, and identities, and empowerment of women to become partners in their health care.
An important component of midwifery care is the recognition and promotion of normal physiologic processes throughout a woman’s lifespan (menarche, pregnancy, birth, and menopause), as well as advocating for non-intervention in those normal processes when there are no complications. CNMs have the education and training required to recognize the need for interventions or technology, monitor for potential health problems, and work closely with other members of the healthcare team, as needed, to provide optimal patient care.
Prenatal Care with a CNM
Pregnancy is viewed as a normal physiologic event in a woman’s life. A CNM is trained to care for low-risk women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
Acknowledging the therapeutic value of human presence in healthcare, a CNM will support and educate expecting mothers throughout their pregnancy and discuss standard recommendations for testing/screenings in pregnancy, creating a partnership with each woman throughout the course of her prenatal care and labor/birth experience. CNMs work closely with OB/GYNs, should a consult or referral be indicated at any time during pregnancy or delivery.
