Pregnant No TobaccoThe BABY & ME – Tobacco Free Program is a tobacco cessation program created to reduce the burden of tobacco use among women during the prenatal and postpartum period. Pregnancy represents an opportunity to reevaluate lifestyle behaviors, including tobacco use, as women often recognize the serious consequences. Tobacco exacts a terrible toll on health far beyond pregnancy, reaching across the entire life course. Tobacco use remains the most common cause of pregnancy complications and death among infants.

I would recommend the Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program to any pregnant woman who is smoking and wants to quit.

E-cigarettes and other tobacco products containing nicotine are not safe to use during
pregnancy. Nicotine is a health danger for pregnant women and developing babies and can damage a developing baby’s brain and lungs.

Quitting tobacco during pregnancy:

  • Decreases the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, and birth defects of the mouth and lip
  • Reduces the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID)
  • Reduces the risk of pregnancy complications such as placental abruption, ectopic pregnancy, and high-blood pressure
  • Lowers the risk for respiratory illness, middle ear infections, and reduced lung growth in children
Women who enroll in the BABY & ME – Tobacco Free Program are provided with tools that will help them successfully quit tobacco and stay quit after their baby is born. The program’s design – which includes individual face-to-face counseling, biomarker feedback, and contingency management – has been proven effective in decreasing the number of women who smoke during and after pregnancy, and improving birth outcomes among babies born to women enrolled in the program.
