A gastroenterologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive system. After completing medical school and a three-year residency in Internal Medicine, gastroenterologists enter a rigorous fellowship program that provides more training devoted to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract over a period of three years. Fellowship training encompasses every aspect of this specialized practice, from initial patient assessment to determining how and when to perform endoscopic procedures, proper interpretation of test results, and optimum recommendations for care and treatment of a full range of gastroenteroloical diseases and conditions.

Gastroenterologists are the only sub-specialists who receive training dedicated to endoscopic procedures such as upper GI endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Through this additional training, gastroenterologists become experts at using advanced endoscopic techniques for both diagnosis and treatment of a full range of digestive conditions in all types of patients. Studies have shown that, compared to other physicians, gastroenterologists perform higher quality endoscopic procedures with more accurate detection, evaluation and diagnosis.

The high quality of advanced gastroenterology training is assured by the oversight of professional organizations, including the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association. Gastroenterologists become board certified after completion of their specialized training and successful completion of the gastroenterology certification test administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Through their residencies, fellowships and extensive endoscopic experience, gastroenterologists receive years of highly specialized training following medical school. Gastroenterologists combine broad-based medical knowledge, superior endoscopic skills, and in-depth knowledge of the organs, functions, diseases and treatments of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastroenterologists provide the highest quality in advanced diagnosis and treatment for conditions related to the digestive system.
