This innovative technique allows physicians to non-invasively examine the small intestine. The patient swallows a smooth capsule containing a tiny camera that travels painlessly through the digestive system and is naturally passed from the body. The camera transmits images to a small recorder worn by the patient. This advanced technology allows the physician to gather detailed information on the small intestine, which previously would have required surgery. Capsule endoscopy does not replace colonoscopy which examines the large intestine.
