This test is performed to evaluate the functioning of the anal canal, usually to diagnose the cause of chronic constipation, fecal incontinence or difficulty with defacation. It may also be used as a treatment for fecal incontinence, to retrain muscles to contract more forcefully. This test measures the pressures of the anal sphincter muscles, the sensation in the rectum, and the neural reflexes that are needed for normal bowel movements.
