For Angela Plante, the decision to have a hysterectomy came after years of careful consideration.

"Emotionally, it took me almost 5 years to prepare, emotionally, psychologically for it," Plante said. "I had to be completely ready. This is the right thing to do."

Angela went through the procedure as an outpatient and she's one of many.

The National Women's Health Network says nearly one in three women have the procedure by age 60.

"Lots of reasons through the gamut," said Dr. Thomas Hutchens of the Mid Dakota Clinic. "Pre-cancer, up to benign conditions such as endometriosis, fybroids, adhesions and chronic pain issues."

Plante struggled with chronic pain for years, but she says her strong relationship with Dr. Hutchens helped her make the tough decision.

"My husband and I went in with Dr. Hutchens and prayed with him two days before the surgery and gave him an angel," Plante said. "I knew it was the right thing to do."

She also credits the online support group, "HysterSisters," with helping her during recovery.

The website helps other women going through hysterectomies connect and share information.

"This is a pivotal moment in a woman's life," Plante said. "You have nothing to be ashamed of, or to be alone or be afraid of. There are women out there who have gone through it."

Plante says she's sharing her story because she wants women to start talking about a procedure that doesn't get enough attention.
