Endocrinology
Diabetes, hormonal imbalance, osteoporosis & thyroid disease

Endocrinology is the study of endocrine glands, which secrete hormones that play an important role in the complex process of metabolism.

Mid Dakota Clinic has the only board-certified endocrinologist in the region, providing you with a level of care and expertise you won't find elsewhere. Endocrinologists specialize in the medical treatment of the body's chemical messengers (hormones) and its control mechanisms (metabolism). Endocrinologists are trained to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in your system.

Examples of endocrine glands and their hormones include:

Thyroid Gland
The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck. It secretes thyroid hormone. Its purpose is to regulate the body's overall metabolism.

Parathyroid Glands
Four parathyroid glands are located behind the thyroid. They secrete parathyroid hormone. Their purpose it to control calcium levels throughout the body.

Adrenal Glands
There are two adrenal glands located on the top of each kidney. The inner part of the glands secrete adrenaline, the outer part secretes aldosterone and cortisol. Their purpose is to maintain salt levels in the blood, maintain blood pressure, help control kidney function and control overall fluid concentrations in the body.

Neuroendocrine Glands of the Pancreas
Located deep in the abdomen behind the stomach, the pancreas is primarily a digestive organ. It also contains extremely important endocrine cells which secrete several hormones, including insulin, glucagons and somatostatin. The purpose of these glands is to control blood glucose (blood sugar), overall glucose metabolism (important in diabetes), and help control other endocrine cells of the digestive tract.

Pituitary Gland
Located at the base of the brain, this gland secretes thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), adrenocotropic hormone (ACTH), and others. Its purpose is to control the activity of many other endocrine glands (thyroid, ovaries, adrenal, etc).
